Monsoon Season Is Here — Here's What That Means for Your Drive-Thru
If you've operated a restaurant in Arizona for more than a year, you know what July and August bring. The sky turns green. The wind hits first. Then the wall of dust, and then the rain — sometimes a light shower, sometimes a flash flood that turns your parking lot into a river in twenty minutes.
Monsoon season in the Southwest is not a weather event. It's a maintenance season. And if you're not thinking about your drive-thru system before the storms roll in, you'll be thinking about it after — usually when something isn't working.
Here's what I see every year, and what you can do about it.
The Number One Issue After a Monsoon: Inbound Audio
Every year, without fail, the most common call I get after a major storm is about inbound audio. The customer pulls up, staff can hear something, but the voice is muffled, distorted, or barely audible.
Here's why: it's almost impossible to fully prevent moisture from reaching your microphone during a serious monsoon. The combination of wind, rain, and airborne debris finds its way into enclosures that handle direct sun and dry heat just fine. Water and microphones don't coexist well.
The thing that makes the biggest difference — and the thing I check on every site I service — is the audio foam in front of the microphone inside the enclosure. That foam sits between the microphone element and the exterior of the unit. It's the first line of defense against moisture, debris, and wind. When it's fresh and properly seated, it does its job. When it's old, compressed, or missing, the microphone is essentially exposed to whatever the storm brings.
This is not an expensive fix. It's a small piece of foam. But it's the kind of thing that only gets checked when someone is on site doing a proper service visit — and it makes a significant difference in how your system holds up through storm season.
What to Check After a Major Storm
Don't wait for something to fail before you assess your system after a monsoon. Here's what I look at on every post-storm service call:
The microphone and speaker post After a storm, inspect the enclosure for any visible moisture intrusion, debris accumulation, or physical damage from wind or flying objects. If the inbound audio sounds different than it did before the storm — muffled, choppy, lower volume — that's your signal that the microphone needs attention. We check the foam, inspect the microphone element itself, and test both inbound and outbound audio before we leave a site.
The wiring This is also when we look for rodent activity. Monsoon season drives rodents toward structures for shelter, and drive-thru enclosures and conduit runs are prime territory. Chewed wiring doesn't always cause an immediate outage — sometimes it shows up as intermittent faults that are hard to diagnose without getting eyes on the physical cable. The speaker Heat and UV exposure through summer degrade speaker components over time, and a storm can accelerate the failure of a speaker that was already on its way out. If the speaker sounds tinny, distorted, or noticeably worse after a storm, it may need replacement rather than adjustment.
The loop detection This one is critical and often overlooked. Your loop wire is embedded in the pavement at your order point and at your timer position near the window. That wire is sealed into a cut in the asphalt — and that sealant is what keeps moisture out.
Flash floods are hard on sealant. If water gets under compromised sealant and reaches the wire, you'll start seeing intermittent loop detection — cars that get detected sometimes and missed other times. Walk your lanes after any significant storm and look for exposed wire, cracked sealant, or sections where the pavement cut has opened up. If you see any of that, call it in before the next rain comes.
Left unaddressed, a compromised loop usually means a full recut and reinstall — which is significantly more involved than catching it early and resealing
What I've Seen Happen When Microphones Aren't Protected
I've been called out multiple times to sites where the inbound audio failed completely after a storm — not because of a catastrophic equipment failure, but because the microphone had been exposed to the elements without proper foam protection, and the unit was already aging.
A storm that a newer, properly serviced unit would have handled fine was enough to push these microphones over the edge.
Both situations were preventable. The foam replacement is inexpensive. The service call to catch it before storm season is routine. The cost of diagnosing and replacing a failed microphone mid-summer — while your lunch rush is backing up because customers can't place orders — is a different conversation entirely.
The Honest Pre-Monsoon Checklist
If you want to be proactive before storm season hits rather than reactive after, here's what matters most:
Audio foam — Has it been replaced recently? If you don't know, it probably hasn't. This is the single highest-value item on the pre-monsoon list.
Loop sealant — Walk your lanes and look at the condition of the asphalt cuts around your detection loops. Any cracking, lifting, or exposed wire needs attention before the rains come.
Drainage around your speaker post — Is water going to pool at the base of your post during a heavy rain? Standing water around equipment is a problem.
Physical integrity of enclosures — Any existing cracks, gaps, or loose panels in your speaker post enclosure or canopy structure are going to be worse after a monsoon than before one.
Speaker condition — If your speaker was sounding rough before summer, monsoon season is likely to finish it off.
The best time to address any of these is before the first storm. The second best time is right now, whatever the calendar says.
